What Is Whiplash? Symptoms, Causes and Recovery

Whiplash is a term used for the neck strain that happens when the head is thrown rapidly backward and forward, most commonly in a rear-end car collision. The motion stretches the muscles, ligaments and joints of the neck beyond their normal range, and symptoms can range from mild stiffness to significant pain and reduced mobility.

What Causes Whiplash?

When a vehicle is hit from behind, the seat pushes the body forward while the head lags behind, then whips forward again. That rapid back-and-forth can strain the soft tissues of the neck even at surprisingly low speeds. Side impacts and other collision angles can produce the same effect.

Whiplash is not limited to car accidents. It can also occur in falls, contact sports and any situation where the neck is suddenly accelerated and decelerated.

What Are the Common Symptoms?

Typical symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, reduced range of motion when turning the head, headaches that start at the base of the skull, and muscle tightness through the neck and shoulders.

Importantly, symptoms can be delayed. Many people feel fine at the accident scene and only notice stiffness the next morning, as muscles tighten and inflammation develops. That delayed pattern is one reason an evaluation after an accident is worth considering even when you feel okay initially.

  • Neck pain and stiffness, sometimes worsening over days
  • Reduced ability to turn or bend the neck
  • Headaches beginning at the back of the head
  • Muscle tightness and tenderness in the shoulders
  • Dizziness or fatigue in some cases

How Long Does Whiplash Last?

Recovery time varies widely. Some people improve within a few weeks, while others continue to deal with symptoms for several months, especially when pain radiates into the shoulders or arms. The duration depends on the severity of the strain, your health going in and how consistently you address it.

An evaluation early on helps establish a baseline. Knowing what is going on, and having a monitored plan, beats guessing while symptoms linger.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care can support whiplash recovery by improving neck joint mobility with gentle, controlled techniques and by addressing the muscle tightness that often accompanies the injury. Rehabilitative exercise helps restore strength and range of motion so the neck can handle daily movement again.
