How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?
A handpiece is placed against the skin over the target area, and acoustic wave energy is delivered into the tissue beneath. The intent is to stimulate a local tissue response in the treated area, which is why it is often chosen for chronic tendon problems like plantar fasciitis, Achilles pain and elbow tendinopathy.
It is important to be realistic: shockwave is not a magic wand for every ache. It is used because it can support recovery processes in stubborn areas, but results vary by condition and person.
What Does a Session Feel Like?
Most patients feel a tapping or pulsing pressure at the treatment site. Sensitivity depends on the area and the individual, and the intensity is adjusted so you remain comfortable during the session. Some local soreness afterward is common and typically settles on its own.
- A session usually lasts about 15 to 20 minutes
- No downtime afterward for most patients
- A series of sessions is commonly part of the plan
- Response is monitored and the plan adjusts
Who May Not Be a Candidate?
Shockwave is generally not used during pregnancy, over infected areas, or in patients with bleeding disorders or who take certain blood-thinning medications. A full history and examination determine whether it is appropriate for you.
At ChiroPrime Orlando, shockwave therapy is one tool in a larger plan that may include chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy and rehabilitation. It is selected deliberately, only where the evaluation supports it. See the shockwave therapy page for details.
